Another happy customer at St Alkmund’s Church

To say that this has been a challenging year would be an understatement. Half way through our work at St Alkmund’s Church Whitchurch, the coronavirus struck and we had to lock down the same as most businesses.

Leaving the Church fully scaffolded and no work taking place during this period is not what we would have wanted.

The positive message is that we returned, finished our work to this fine 18th century Church and left the customer happy which is borne out by the attached letter of thank’s

Progress at St Thomas Stockton Heath

Its always nice to see the new hand carved stonework being set back in place. For months now we have been chiseling the worn out Hollington stone from the tower whilst our Stonemasons back at the yard skillfully hand carve the new masonry using techniques that go back hundreds of years. Then in a few short weeks the new stones are set in position and the Church begins to live again.

St Maries Cathedral Sheffield Milestone Achieved

The Stonemasons at Lloyd and Smith reached another important milestone this week. The Cross and gilded weather vane have been built back in place and once again they shine brightly over Sheffield. To mark the occasion reporters from various Sheffield newspapers climbed the 29 ladders to the top with us to see what all the fuss was about.
Now the scaffold is on its way down and the end of the project is in sight. It will probably be another 50 years before anyone else gets to the top of the spire.

St Maries Cathedral Spire Rebuilt and Gilded

Despite gale force winds and near constant driving rain for the last few months we are nearly there, part of the spire has been taken down and rebuilt. On Wednesday the 10th February 2016 we will be proudly hoisting the cross and the restored and gilded weather vane 200ft to the top and setting them in position for all to see across the great city of Sheffield. You have a few more hours to view the cross in the Cathedral and then its back to the top for the next 50 years. Its not been easy lowering those great spire stones to ground and taking them back up again but we are lucky to have some of the best Stonemasons around who have shown great skill and dedication to brave the elements at such a height and get the job done.
So next time you shopping around the centre of Sheffield on a summers day and you catch a golden glint in your eye, look skywards towards the Cathedral and check out your restored spire.

Church Maintenance

Prevention is Better than Cure !!
In the past 15 years we have restored countless Churches, Cathedrals and Stately Homes. The overriding observation we have made in that time is how most of the restoration work could have been avoided by simple regular upkeep of the building’s roof and rain water disposal system.
To that end we have set up a dedicated team of skilled operatives who will undertake all aspects of maintenance to ensure you get the maximum life from your building.
Services we offer :-
General survey of the buildings condition with report and photographs
Gutters and downpipes and gulley’s checked
Silt , vegetation and debris build up causing blockages
Walls checked for signs of dampness, algae, moss, washed out mortar and cracks
       Fascias, supports and falls checked
Broken tiles, debris on the ground, damp course levels and flashings checked (more…)

“Lloyd and Smith’s pure craftmanship restored this precious and fragile monument.  It forms a focus for remembrance services, and will do for a long time into the future.”
