Luton Hoo situated on the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire border is one of the most famous historical grade I listed buildings in the area.

Lloyd and Smith Limited were the selected stonemasons to undertake the restoration and conservation to the stone facade and elevations. Over a period of two years continuous working their masons and stone carvers restored 27 chimney stacks, and carried out over 3500 traditional masonry indent repairs and replacement pieces, including the dismantling and rebuilding of the upper cornice and parapet section to the east elevation. Major restoration was also undertaken to the east and west porticos which required substantial structural repair as well as meticulous detailed restoration to bring them back to their original grandeur.

The whole project proved very challenging for numerous reasons mainly the many different types of stone used throughout the original building – in the end they identified six different stone types of which only two were still available in the necessary quantity required.

Following the main house restoration we also undertook rebuilding works to the ornate garden water features, bridges and garden walls as well as the restoration to the Robert Adams grade II* stable block. To complete the project Lloyd and Smith Ltd were commissioned to supply and erect all the entrance, exit and directional signage throughout the 1065 acre Capability Brown designed estate.

This project has proved to be Lloyd and Smith Ltd’s most successful contract to date demonstrating traditional skills that have restored the appearance, stability and weather-tightness of this beautiful building for future generations to enjoy.

On numerous occasions throughout this contract Lloyd and Smith Ltd received special praise for the quality, understanding and high level of craftsmanship required to produce the desired result with the project emphasis on conservation and restoration.
