Not all Stone-masonry is to be found on Historic Churches. Sometimes we get the chance to use stone in a modern setting. Manchester Crematorium was just such a project.
The modern minimalist building was finished off in beautiful Portland Stone Cladding. The Portland Stone Cladding came from two quarries local to each. The base of the building was clad in Jordans Whitbed Limestone showing thousands of fossils and giving a textured band around the base. The majority of the building was clad in Grove Whitbed giving a smoother finish and nice contrast to the base.
Great care and accuracy was needed to construct the thin shell around existing block building. Each slab weighing in at around 100kg had to be carefully balanced on end with precision to meet the bespoke fixings. The finished article provides a building of great solidity and the fine pointed symmetrical joints prove that this has been built by craftsmen.
We were very pleased with the outcome and very happy that future bereaved families would have a space for calm reflection in a very busy part of Manchester.
